As a young mother, but also eager to test her potential as an artist, van Manen needed a strong will and tenacious courage to succeed. During this time, she photographed her family and immediate family. Decades later, her son, one of the main subjects of the series, reminded van Manen of these photographs. These black-and-white images are characterised by their brightness, capturing the joy, warmth and security of her children and family in the 70s. Easter and Oak Trees offers the reader a charming invitation to share a small part of this family idyll.
