Christopher Street, 1976 by Sunil Gupta

STANLEY/BARKER

A collection of works by Canadian artist, writer, and activist Sunil Gupta.

The artist, who studied under the female photographer Lisette Model while attending New School in New York, used to go to Christopher Street on weekends with a camera in hand. After the Stonewall Rebellion, which was a turning point in the gay rights movement, and in this chaotic time on the eve of the AIDS epidemic, the young author and his colleagues are aiming for social acceptance of gays. I was devoted to creating an open place that no one had ever seen.

“I started photography in the early 1970s. At first it was just a hobby, but in the nascent gay liberation movement I found purpose, marching for gay rights, I started documenting the burgeoning gay scene and looking back, this photo is both nostalgic and iconic because it captures a very important moment in my personal history. - Sunil Gupta
