NEAR by Martine Stig

A photobook by Dutch artist Martine Stig.

Using a modified full-spectrum camera and a set of bandpass filters, Stig explores her immediate environment in near-infrared and ultraviolet light—wavelengths imperceptible to humans but visible to bats, bees, and machines. The camera’s white balance function cannot operate as intended with this setup, even though it is normally used to transfer the colour of light (as perceived by humans) to an image. The resulting alien colours emphasise the absence of standards or norms, capturing a version of reality that is subtly different from what we are used to seeing.
