MAINE by Gerry Johansson
A photobook by Swedish photographer Gerry Johansson.
In 2023, Johansson wandered through the state of Maine with his Rolleiflex in hand. “Why is American photography so often focused on the West?” he wondered, drawn by curiosity to a region he first encountered 50 years ago through the work of Paul Strand. This book revisits the format of Johansson’s earlier publications, presenting nearly 200 black-and-white duotone photographs arranged alphabetically by the oddly poetic names of northeastern towns—Bath, Friendship, Purgatory, and more.
With his singular eye for architecture and landscape, Johansson offers not just a portrait of place but a profound insight into his way of seeing, walking, and thinking. The result is a meditative journey through a geography that feels both specific and abstract.
