I Will Be Wolf by Bertien van Manen

MACK

A photo book by Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen.

In December 1975, heavily inspired by Swiss photographer Robert Frank's monumental documentary photobook, "The Americans," van Manen traveled to Budapest, a very old, baroque city that was then on the other side of the Iron Curtain. Commuters, greengrocers, pharmacists, cafe staff, street vendors - the Hungarian scene before globalization took hold is captured on monochrome film with a sense of distance that is reminiscent of Frank's influence. This series can be said to be the origin of the photographer, who travels to places in transition and photographs them through his interactions with the local people. Edited by British photographer Stephen Gill, who worked with van Manen on the 2011 masterpiece "Let's Sit Down Before We Go."

*The Iron Curtain is a satirical term referring to the secrecy and closed-off attitude that the socialist countries of Eastern Europe adopted towards capitalist countries during the Cold War.
