Gluckauf by Bertien van Manen
A collection of works by Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen.
The son of a state mine engineer, van Manen grew up in Heerlen, the heart of the eastern Dutch old mining region. This book focuses on mining community life, a recurring theme in van Manen's work until the late 1990s. The photographs in this book were taken in Wakefield and New Charleston in Yorkshire (UK, 1970s), Most (Czech Republic, 1980s), the Appalachian Mountains (USA, 1980s-1990s) and Apanas in Siberia (Russia, 1990s). Rather than portraying the ruggedness of a stereotypical mining life, van Manen captured the humanity of the people living in mining towns and what goes on in their homes: a mother and daughter playing in the pool, children in front of the TV, a family sitting at the kitchen table, miners on the bus.
This book was published in conjunction with van Manen's solo exhibition held at the SCHUNCK Museum in the Netherlands from April 18 to October 1, 2023.
