Future Estate by Matthew Harvey
An artist book by Matthew Harvey.
Between 2018 and 2024, Matthew Harvey travelled extensively, photographing the evolving intersections of ecosystems and infrastructure being reshaped by large-scale capital investments. Working regularly in offset printing plants across East Asia, Europe, and North America, he was drawn to environments where life unfolds at the margins of industrial production—worlds messy, contingent, and in flux.
All photographs were shot on 35mm consumer film and, wherever possible, developed on-site in 1-hour photo labs. The resulting images—marked by inconsistencies in processing, scanning, and human handling—retain the aesthetic of another era: one defined by the material and commercial intensity of everyday image-making.
Future Estate compiles 184 of these photographs, accompanied by autobiographical reflections and field notes by Harvey, as well as an essay by urbanist AbdouMaliq Simone. Together, they explore how places are shaped—and disordered—by global commodity chains, uneven developments, zoning, labour exploitation, and transnational capital.
Through unheroic imagery and peripheral perspectives, the book proposes alternative ways of seeing a world that is at once produced, consumed, inhabited, and precariously sustained.
