Failing Forward by Marjolein Blom
A collection of works by Dutch artist Marjolein Blom.
Fifty years ago, in what was once called the Space Age, scientific progress and optimism about the future was boundless. The desire to send the first man to the moon spurred technological advances. But while the technology brought by the space industry entered our daily lives, science became increasingly estranged from them. Scientific interpretations are complex for non-experts, and as a result, exchanges are based on trust. This relationship has always been fragile, and in recent years scientific facts have often been considered "opinions". The truth is that science is in fact a temporary and uncertain activity, with ambiguity, curiosity and unpredictability as fundamental elements of the process. Can science be seen as a metaphor for life itself? Surprise and uncertainty? The process of falling and rising? In this work, Marjolein Blom explores the connection between art and science. She combines her own photographs of small and big mysteries of the everyday world with photographs from the NASA archives of scientists working on a model of space travel to create a strange, kaleidoscopic work that focuses on the idea of "attempt".
