A photobook by American photographer Terri Weifenbach.

“How do we perceive our environment? What is our relationship to the delicate world around us? How can photography capture what is essentially elusive?”

In Cloud Physics, Weifenbach questions photography’s capacity to grasp the permanence of natural and fragile phenomena through a visual exploration of life, nature, water, air, light, and fire. Drawing from scientific data used to measure atmospheric phenomena—such as cloud formation—she creates a body of work that spans from the salt marshes of St Catherines Island and the deep canyons of Montana to the ancient parks of Nara, Japan, and the botanical gardens of the National Museum of Natural History in Paris. Through subtle shifts in light, humidity, and heat, she explores how we perceive nature. And yet—where exactly are we? Until the end, the viewer remains uncertain.

At once investigative and poetic, the precision of Weifenbach’s digital photography coexists with the mystery and lyricism that define her work. This book marks a new phase in her artistic journey, reminiscent of Wolfgang Tillmans’ Neue Welt in its scope and ambition.
