Atomic Island by Ben Huff
A collection of works by American photographer Ben Huff.
This book contains photographs taken on Adak Island, located at the southernmost tip of the U.S. state of Alaska. Adak Island served as a frontline U.S. military base during World War II and the Cold War from 1934 to 1997. Originally an uninhabited island facing the Bering Sea, it transformed into the fourth largest city in Alaska in just a few years during World War II, and at its peak, was home to as many as 6,000 military personnel and their families. In March 1997, the U.S. Navy abandoned the island. Currently, about 75 residents live on the island, along with decaying military remains and homes.
