Södrakull Frösakull by Mikael Olsson

Steidl

A collection of works by Stockholm-based artist Mikael Olsson.

This book presents a variety of photographs taken between 2000 and 2006 of two architectural works by Bruno Mathsson, a leading Swedish designer of modernism. Staying for an hour or a week at a time, Olsson delved deeply into the architecture and the body of the building, attempting to reveal its essential characteristics amidst visible deterioration. Olsson also emphasizes the psychological aspects of the building's substance and the act of looking, using Mathsson's architectural heritage as a backdrop. He arranged the interiors of the rooms, often transforming them into a stage, with light, shadow and emptiness as the only props. The living room, for example, was rearranged and photographed twenty times. Like him, Olsson used the house as a place of experimentation, testing its possibilities. In this work, Olsson pays close attention to the design of the house and its remains, providing an archaeology of Swedish modernist domesticity and of Mathsson's own stay there.
