Sheila Hicks: Weaving As a Metaphor
A collection of works by American artist Sheila Hicks.
This book focuses on approximately 100 miniatures from public and private collections that Hicks has produced over the past 50 years. With their distinctive color, thoughtful composition, and narrative, these miniatures reveal the emergence and continuity of her approach to work. Internationally known as a master of a textile vocabulary at an extremely diverse scale - sculpture, tapestry, site-specific commissions for public spaces, and environments that repurpose clothing and uniforms - Hicks has thoughtfully crafted miniatures throughout her itinerant career. Her palm-sized works are a record of her remarkable personal journey.
The special nap-like finish on the top, bottom and fore-edge of the book embodies the appearance of a collection of artworks. The iconic design was created by Dutch graphic designer Irma Boom.
