Shame Space by Martine Syms

Primary Information

A collection of works by American artist Martine Sims.

Sims is widely recognized for his work that combines conceptual art with humor and social commentary. As an artist, he has had solo exhibitions at museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the ICA London. He also plays in a band, hosts a monthly radio show on NTS called CCartalkLA, and runs an independent publishing house called Dominica, which focuses on blackness.

This artist book explores the possibilities of narrative and identity, combining diary entries written by Sims between 2015 and 2017 with stills from her video work Ugly Plymouts, released in 2020. The book design mimics a Bible, with an embossed leather-like cover and gold painted borders.

First edition limited to 1,500 copies, out of print.
