Rich and Poor by Jim Goldberg
A collection of works by American photographer Jim Goldberg.
This book was published in 2014 as a new edition of Rich and Poor, Goldberg's first and representative work, published in 1985.
This series was curated with Robert Adams and Joel Sternfeld, 1984at the Museum of Modern Art, New York First presented at the exhibition "Three Americans". The book consists of various portraits of the rich and poor that Goldberg shot in San Francisco between 1977 and 1985, each with handwritten text by the subjects. It's a simple idea, but Goldberg was undoubtedly one of the first to notice the power and interaction of elements outside the frame of a photograph. This expanded edition includes photographs from the original edition as well as unpublished vintage and contemporary photographs. Although the appearance is very different from the original, the core of the work is surprisingly consistent, making it an excellent new edition rarely seen in recent years.
