Polder Viii, Tuindorp Oostzaan, Amsterdam 1920 - 2020 by Raimond Wouda
*Restock
A collection of works by Dutch photographer Raimond Wouda.
In 1918, Amsterdam experienced a serious housing shortage caused by rapid population growth, leading to the major social problem of working-class citizens living in poorly ventilated and light-deprived environments. To improve this situation, the Tuijndorp-Oostzaan district, one of Amsterdam's first full-scale garden villages, was created in the north of the city in 1921. To live up to its name of "garden village," each home in this district was equipped with a solid entrance and front and back gardens to provide each home with light, air, ample space, and a proper place to stay.
Uda's grandmother and mother grew up in a small house surrounded by a garden in Tuindorp-Oostzaan. Uda also lived with his mother, father, grandmother and two of his grandmother's sisters for the first three years of his life until his parents built a house in the city. Even after he left there, he spent weekends and holidays at his grandmother's house as a child.Twyndorpplayed an important role in Uda's life. As she grew older, Twyndorp became a stranger, more familiar, ambivalent place for Uda. Uda continues to photograph the place today as a way of making sense of it. In this book, Uda incorporates texts, archival materials, and other sources in addition to her own photographs to further explore the historical complexity and context of the area. The three different materials blend together to gradually unravel the history of the area and the author's identity.
