PARKETT ─ Tiane Doan na Champassak
A publication reworking early gallery advertisements from Parkett into a focused reflection on language, form and the gallery culture of the 1980s.
In PARKETT, French artist Tiane Doan na Champassak draws on his own collection of the influential art magazine Parkett, published between 1984 and 2017. His subtle intervention consists of removing large numbers of double-page gallery advertisements that appeared during the magazine’s first five years.
Consistent in style and format, these advertisements can be read as works in themselves, revealing how text often took precedence over image within the conceptual practices of the period. At the same time, the publication brings into view the repeated appearance of certain artists within the gallery scene of the 1980s, including Marcel Broodthaers, Michael Heizer, Louise Bourgeois, Ed Ruscha, Richard Prince, Anish Kapoor and Cindy Sherman.
