Okinawa by Takuma Nakahira

Rat Hole Gallery

The final photo book by Japanese photographer Takuma Nakahira

"Takuma Nakahira (1938–2015) was the most radical photographer in post-war Japan. In 1977, although he lost much of his memory due to illness, he made a comeback after taking pictures in Okinawa. This work is based on photographs taken during his four trips to Okinawa in his final years. For Nakahira, Okinawa is a journey into the history and present of the central sovereign nation of Japan. It was the topos and the land that inspired me to make a comeback as a photographer after my amnesia. He became widely known through the 2002 photo book "Hysteric Six Nakahira Takuma" (Hysteric Glamor) and the 2003 "Takuma Nakahira Exhibition "Degree-Zero, Yokohama" (Yokohama Museum of Art). His later style of copying things in a vertical composition based on a transparent understanding was acquired through his encounter with Okinawa. In the sense of a photobook in which Nakahira himself was involved, this work, "Okinawa" is his last new photobook. Nakahira's photographs, which were created while struggling with his own life while suffering from amnesia, are always more vivid than reality and continue to emit a glow that seems to wake up the dormant consciousness of everyday life.
