Matter 2024 ─ Daisuke Yokota (Signed)
A unique artist’s book from Daisuke Yokota’s long-running Matter project, exploring the contradictions between photographic materiality, flatness, and immaterial digital data.
Matter 2024 is an artist’s book by Japanese photographer Daisuke Yokota.
Matter is an artist’s book project that Yokota has pursued continuously for more than a decade. By repeatedly destroying and transforming negatives and prints through reproduction and thermal processing, he pushes the materiality of photography to an excessive degree, while confronting the contradiction that photographs and printed matter ultimately remain flat. The project also considers the data contained within immaterial digital photographs—something that undeniably exists yet has no physical substance. Through these concerns, Matter has become a landmark series that expands the possibilities of photography in the contemporary era, as well as those of the artist’s book and photobook.
Each copy differs in its printing methods, format, and contents, bringing together photographs made by Yokota across different periods of his practice as a one-of-a-kind work.
