Der Sonnenstich by Katinka Bock

Roma Publications

A collection of works by Katinka Bock, a German artist based in Paris and Berlin.

This book was published to coincide with Bock's solo exhibition at the Fondation Pernod Ricard in Paris from February 14th to April 29th, 2023. Known for her sculptures, this exhibition is the first to focus on her photographic works. Of the approximately 65 works on display, this book presents 55 reproductions of photographs taken with old analog cameras between 2015 and 2023. Record. Photographs made in the family, in the city or in nature represent the 'sculptural' perspective that Bock places on objects, spaces, bodies and living things. She inspires her images by observing the idiosyncrasies of shapes and relationships, and like her sculptural work, she quickly captures the life force of the world and frees images from the domination of meaning and intention. be. It is paradoxical to use an old analog camera that takes time to shoot and process, but it is an important factor in maintaining the dynamism of that liberation. The title "Der Sonnenstich" means "sunstroke" in German, and the literal translation of "Sonne" and "Stich" is "thorns of the sun." It was a quote from a story written by Bock's grandfather, a recurring phrase in her own recently published poems, and it also caught her interest in her references to the sun and light. From William Henry Fox Talbot's "Nature's Pencil" to Roland Barthes' "punctum", for Bock, "sun prick" is a word that has replaced "photography" and has been in the history of photography. It corresponds more specifically to various related terms.
