(CD) DISBAND by DISBAND

Primary Information

This CD contains previously unreleased live recordings made between 1979 and 1982 by the feminist performance collective known as "DISBAND."

Feminist singers like Ilona Granet, Donna Henes, Barbara Kruger, Ingrid Sischy, Diane Torr, and Martha Wilson screamed, yelled, sang, and stomped their way through New York's new wave and no wave scenes, blurring the lines between performance art and live music. Reflecting the chaos and transience of the time, the band broke up in 1982, but never made a record. This comprehensive collection of their all-too-brief career features 21 tracks recorded from the band's live performances from 1979 to 1982.

DISBAND was founded in 1978 by Martha Wilson, Daile Kaplan, and Barbara Ess. Kaplan and Ess had been members of influential downtown punk/no wave bands, but Wilson, inspired by her lack of musical training, formed this "female conceptual art punk band" within the New York no wave scene. Though the group started with standard instruments, they quickly abandoned them to focus on their voices, harmonies, and physical percussion (handclaps, foot stomps, etc.) as the foundation for their witty, humorous, and intellectually biting songs. The group reunited in 2008 for MoMA PS1's "WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution" and continues to perform internationally.

Limited to 1,000 copies.
