Unpacking the Journey: Books and Photographs from Norway
|
IACK is pleased to present "Unpacking the Journey: Books and Photographs from Norway".
In September 2026, Yukihito Kono, director of IACK, was invited to Oslo as an artist and curator for Fotobokfestivalen, a photobook festival organised by FFF (Forbundet Frie Fotografer), the Norwegian union of photographers. In the exhibition, five artists presented installations relating to the book, while Kono questioned the significance of the photobook today through a curated selection of ten photobooks and an accompanying statement.
During his stay, Kono spent time with local artists, publishers and bookshops, encountering the photographic and publishing culture of a country with a different cultural and social background. This presentation is the first instalment in a series conceived out of a wish to share that experience.
Taking "unpacking" — the starting point of the series — as its theme, it brings together photobooks and art books that Kono bought from, or was given by, local bookshops, galleries and the artists themselves.
Alongside the books, photographs Kono took during his stay will be displayed on the walls of the shop. IACK has always sold books imported from abroad; this time, the space will let you feel more directly that these items have travelled here from afar, and experience the journey continuing alongside the books.
From the first day of the exhibition, two new titles from the Oslo-based publisher Multipress, which IACK has long carried, and the latest artist book by Ethan Rafal, arriving in Japan for the first time, will also be available for purchase.
On Saturday 24 October, Kono will give a talk reporting on his stay. We look forward to welcoming you.

Yukihito Kono
Born in 1989, based in Kanazawa, Ishikawa. He moved to the UK in 2011 and completed an MA in Fine Art Photography at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. Having studied literature and art in different places, his work takes shape through delicate choices and a bold acceptance of chance; rooted in the traditions of photography, it remains open to reflections that cross genres and eras. In 2017 he opened IACK, an atelier, gallery and bookshop in Kanazawa, under the concept of an "open study".
