Bertian van Manen's photo collection
Saturday, August 31, 2024 - Monday, September 23, 2024

IACK is pleased to present a special collection of photo books by Dutch photographer Bertien van Manen.

After studying French and German literature at Leiden University in the Netherlands, van Manen worked as a translator, French teacher and model while raising two young children. However, at the age of 40, she began her career as one of the few female fashion photographers in Amsterdam at the time, and was later inspired by the landmark documentary photobook "The Americans" (1958) by Swiss photographer Robert Frank, to become a documentary photographer.

Among van Manen's works, which were shot all over the world, including Europe, Asia, and America, "A Hundred Summers, A Hundred Winters" (1994) and "Let's Sit Down Before We Go" (2011), produced between 1991 and 2011, are known as some of the earliest documentary photographs shot in post-Soviet countries after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Van Manen took the time to learn Russian and photographed the people he met and became close to in those places, conveying the life and prosperity of countries that were shrouded in mystery at the time.

IACK has been collecting all of van Manen's photobooks published to date, with the dream of one day inviting the artist himself to hold an exhibition. The artist has sadly passed away. This special feature will introduce her masterpieces and her trajectory through all 10 photo books she has published to date and her latest book, "I am the only woman there" (2024). We hope that this will be an opportunity for those who are hearing the artist's name for the first time, as well as those who have already come into contact with her work, to experience her charm once again.
