Opacities
Line Bøhmer Løkken & Marte Aas
6 - 28 December, 2025

IACK is pleased to present an exhibition by the Norwegian photographer Line Bøhmer Løkken and the Norwegian artist Marte Aas.

Løkken and Aas spent their student years together and are now actively working as artists both in Norway and abroad. Multipress, the independent publishing house founded in 2002 by Aas together with Anna-Greta Toresen and joined by Løkken in 2013, has been a pioneering presence in the contemporary art book and photobook publishing scene. More than twenty years after its establishment, it continues to explore the possibilities of expression through the format of the book.

This exhibition—the first in Japan to present the work of the two artists, who have collaborated over many years—focuses on the shared theme of “cloudiness / opacity (Opacities)” found in Løkken’s Dry Eye Dripping Stone (2024), a photobook that received high acclaim upon its publication, and Aas’s new work Vertical Shift. Løkken’s work centres on “the optical and haptic conditions of vision”, engaging also with the field of visual impairment and questioning the physicality of seeing itself. Aas’s work, on the other hand, attempts to liberate photography from a fixed point of view, and in this exhibition, the two works will be presented together as an installation configured within a single space.

Aas's new book Vertical Shift, along with major publications previously released by both artists, will be available for purchase in addition to the exhibition. The artists are scheduled to be present on the opening day. We look forward to welcoming you.

Line Bøhmer Løkken
Born in 1970, photographer. Based in Oslo, Løkken creates photographic works that focus on how we relate to and experience different places through architecture, people, and objects. In recent years, she has explored the haptic dimension of vision, aiming to achieve a tactile mode of reading through the act of looking, thereby placing greater emphasis on a phenomenological approach to photography. She has held exhibitions at Kunstnerforbundet, Galleri BO, Opplandia kunstnersenter, Kunsthall Oslo, Gallery F15, Fotogalleriet, Henie-Onstad Kunstsenter, and Galerie für zeitgenössische Kunst. Løkken has published numerous artist books, and as a co-organiser of the artist-run publishing house Multipress, she is involved in the curation and management of the project Angle 1–90°.

Marte Aas
Born in 1966, photographer and filmmaker. Aas is interested in the intersection of contemporary image culture, history, technology, and the politics of landscape, and her work focuses on the structures and gestures that underpin political and ideological narratives. Using various forms such as film, photography, and installation, she visualises stories in non-linear, layered ways. The starting point for many of her works lies in narratives that exist within contemporary or historical documents, and while grounded in photographic practice, they are reprocessed through research into different media. As a result, themes such as the materiality of photography, the relationship between sign and representation, and the representational value of the photographic image are central to her practice.

Aas studied at the Academy of Photography at the University of Gothenburg and has held numerous exhibitions and screenings in Norway and abroad. Her most recent solo exhibition was It Cannot be Contained at Atelier Nord, Oslo, in 2023. Her publications include Marte Aas – Photography and Film (2010), On the Subject of Body and Space (2013), and Ducks in a Row (2023). She is also one of the founding members of the independent publishing house Multipress.
