Omaha Sketchbook by Gregory Halpern

MACK

This is a collection of works by American photographer Gregory Halpern, who was a candidate for the international photography group Magnum Photos and received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2014.

For 15 years, the artist has been taking photographs in Omaha, Nebraska, expressing his feelings about America's heartland in lyrical images that are open to interpretation and loaded with layers of meaning. In this book, a reproduction of a collection of works made in 2009 in a drawing paper sketchbook, each page is laid out with a rough collage of contact prints. The images reveal the artist's ambivalent feelings of both loathing and attraction to the place, and his enjoyment of dissonance and unexpected harmony. This book is a meditation on America, the men and boys who live there, and its structures of aggression, imperfection, and power.
