METROPOLE by Lewis Bush
A collection of works by British photographer Lewis Bush.
"London, once known as the Metropole, was a mother city at the heart of a vast empire that, in its heyday, encompassed a quarter of the globe. But the title 'mother' belies a highly hierarchical and unequal relationship between the power radiating from the urban centre and the wealthy landlords who received feedback in return. Long after the collapse of the British Empire, a new world force has emerged: global capitalism. London has rebranded itself as 'investment opportunity' and is now a city of endless demolition, rolling cranes and gleaming new skyscrapers.
This book is a chronicle of the brutal eviction of London's foundations by corporate developers, operating for the benefit of wealthy investors and absentee property speculators, as their encroaching high-end developments reduce the number of truly affordable homes and push Londoners ever further from the city centre into the suburbs.
Shot on countless winter nights wandering the city's escalating development, the film documents the dizzying effects of London's capitalist flow. The frameworks of luxury residential towers were photographed as they were being built, then superimposed on top of each other in a series of multiple exposures. The proliferating tangle is a stark reflection of the unsettling scale of the city's transformation; views and aspirations are lost in a process that mirrors the sense of loss felt by many Londoners today."
