Fastidiosa by Jean-Marc Caimi + Valentina Piccinni
A collection of works by the photography duo Jean-Marc Caimi + Valentina Piccinni.
In recent years, a tree disease called Pierce's disease has been causing devastating damage, especially in olive orchards in southern Italy. Pierce's disease is a plant disease caused by the pathogen Xylella fastidiosa. The disease, which spreads through sap-sucking insects, stops the flow of water and nutrients in the xylem vessels, killing the tree from the inside. The first cases since it was discovered in California in the late 1990s were found in the Gallipoli region of Italy in 2013, and it quickly killed olive trees in southern Italy. In response to this situation, EU authorities have formulated a policy to cut down all infected trees within 100 meters, regardless of whether they are infected or not. As a result, the economy of the region, where olive oil production is the main industry, has been hit hard, and farmers throughout Europe have begun to fear the spread of the pathogen.
In Southern Italy, the olive tree is a symbol of economic and historical/cultural importance. As the epicenter of the disease, it is urgent to address the issue, but local residents are protesting against the ruthless cutting, and the authorities are struggling to find a way to improve the situation while accepting their situation. Millions of trees have already been cut down, and there is no cure for the disease. However, agronomists and scientists are experimenting with eradicating the pests that carry the disease and grafting wild olives found in areas affected by Pierce's disease onto faster-growing tree species to create resistant "super trees."
This book is a collection of photographs taken by French photographer Jean-Marc Caimi and Italian photographer Valentina Piccinni, who spent six years living and working at an olive oil factory in the Salento Peninsula in southern Italy. The book compiles the stories of the farmers and the conditions they face into a visual book.
