(Imperfect) Cover to Cover by Michael Snow

Primary Information

A collection of works by Canadian artist Michael Snow.

Cover to Cover was published in 1975 as part of a series produced by the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Curated by Kaspar König and Benjamin Buklow, the now legendary series also included collections of work by Michael Asher, Dara Birnbaum, Jenny Holzer, Donald Judd, Claes Oldenburg, Martha Rosler and Yvonne Rainer.

This is a long-awaited reprint by New York publishers Primary Information and Light Industry. On the left and right sides of each double-page spread are photographs taken from the front and back of a person, and as you turn the page, the story unfolds frame by frame like a movie. However, the photographs are not simply arranged to express the flow of time; sometimes copies of the photographs are inserted or the photographs are reversed, showing Snow's experimental spirit towards the field of "image" in a broad sense and towards books. Once the reader opens the door, they are drawn into a unique world that is like a labyrinth, and before they know it, they are pushed out the door. This is a truly one-of-a-kind artist book.

First edition: 2,500 copies.
