Viaggio in Italia by Luigi Ghirri
Originally published in 1984 and now reissued by Quodlibet, Viaggio in Italia is a seminal collection that laid the foundations for what would become known as the Italian landscape movement.
Conceived by photographer Luigi Ghirri—widely regarded as a pioneer of colour photography—the book brings together a generation of photographers who turned their attention away from exotic travel, sensationalist reportage, and formalist abstraction and instead focused on the quiet poetry of everyday Italian life and landscape.
As photographer Gabriele Basilico once noted, this project marked a shift from the idealised, touristic image of Italy toward one that embraced the “anti-heroic, anti-mythical, everyday and non-rhetorical”. Featuring the work of twenty photographers—many of whom would later rise to international prominence—Viaggio in Italia stands as a visual manifesto of a new photographic sensibility rooted in observation, subtlety, and place.
