The Minute You Have a Minute by Coco Capitán

A photobook by Spanish artist Coco Capitán.

Belmond is collaborating with some of the world’s leading contemporary photographers to produce a collectable library of books, pairing each artist with one of its hotels in a collection of images that reflect each unique destination. For this volume, Coco Capitán photographed the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express in spring 2023 and winter 2024.

Capitán doesn’t like planes. Instead, she prefers more classic modes of transport: cruisers, yachts, vintage cars and, of course, trains. So when she was invited to photograph the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, with its original 1920s carriages and historic routes across Europe, she couldn’t say no. Aboard the train, Capitán took the most instinctive approach. The relationships she built with the staff are interchangeable with the bonds she already had with friends who joined her on the journey. The images oscillate between playful snapshots and more contemplative moments. Both her images and the series title are reminders that, amidst all the glamour, the pilgrimage is as important as the destination. This new reality is fleeting, soon to belong to someone else.
