Conceived around a reversal of the boundaries between the inside and outside of institutional museums and organizations, the publication brings together minutes, internal documents, and other records relating to the exhibition. The result is an unusual catalogue and documentary account that also examines the institutions responsible for producing it.
As the twentieth century drew to a close, younger artists were seeking new paradigms while the institutional art world struggled to respond. The seemingly innocent phrase “somebody left the door open” became a productive way to audit the institution, reveal new elements within the artistic process, and clarify the relationship between inside and outside.
