The book began when Kono looked back through photographs he had made in recent years and realized that many of the objects they depict were no longer in his possession. His aim, however, was not to compile an inventory of things that had been lost. The texts do not function as captions, nor is there a fixed correspondence between a photograph and the words placed beside it. Through the book's distinctive layout, images seem to emerge in the space between photograph and language, only to disappear again as the pages turn.

As the title suggests, the work looks not toward nostalgia for what was once there, but toward what comes after its loss. It is also a quiet homage to Shuntaro Tanikawa's 2013 poem Sono Ato (After That). We live by letting go of many things, often without noticing, while at the same time encountering something new. The choice of a paper that readily shows the passage of time resonates with this theme: its changing texture holds past and present together, quietly illuminating the countless “afterwards” that lie dormant within us.
