Polaroids ─ David Armstrong
An intimate photobook tracing David Armstrong’s life, friendships and surroundings through a sequence of Polaroids made by the artist and those close to him.
Polaroids is a photobook by American photographer David Armstrong. Bringing together Polaroids taken by Armstrong as well as by his friends, the book offers a deeply personal portrait of his life, relationships and environment. Among those pictured are Bruce Balboni, Nan Goldin, Lisa Love, Cookie Mueller and members of his family, many of whom also appeared in Armstrong’s earlier publication Night and Day.
After completing Night and Day in 2012, Armstrong turned his attention to a body of Polaroids from the 1970s that had newly come to light. The book was developed in close collaboration with the artist, who did not live to see its publication. The final element added to the volume was a poem by Frank O’Hara, requested by Armstrong in his last email concerning the book.
Each cover also features a reproduced Polaroid—re-photographed rather than printed—giving every copy a distinct and singular presence.
