Horror Vacui: Fotografie En de Lege Stad, Photography and the Deserted City

Witte Zaal

Exhibition catalog published in conjunction with the 2003 exhibition "Horror Vacui: Fotografie En de Lege Stad, Photography and the Deserted City" held at "De Witte Zaal" in Ghent, Belgium.

Big cities are generally associated with the hustle and bustle of people and masses, but Gabriele Basilico, Jan Kempenaers, Aglaia Konrad ) and others repeat the motif of empty and deserted cities. In this book, art historian Steven Jacobs details the creation of this photographic image. He shows that the preference for urban emptiness stems from a variety of sources. For example, emptiness can be caused by large-scale destruction projects, the ravages of war, natural disasters, and the dilution of modern urban fabric. But emptiness can also be the result of the technical limitations of any style of aesthetic approach. For example, photography references the stark simplicity of architectural drawings, creates drama in abstract forms, and evokes sublime fear, loneliness, and alienation. In addition to this essay, which traces the history of photography for about 150 years, this book examines how three contemporary European photographers have dealt with the empty city as a motif.
