HAMADA ─ Shin Hamada
A photobook documenting the making of a book through the artist’s own photographic practice.
HAMADA is a photobook by Japanese photographer Shin Hamada that takes as its point of departure the statement in the artist’s profile that he is “primarily working in portraiture, documentary, and reportage.” Tracing the process of completing a single volume over the course of roughly a year, the book turns that very process into its subject, forming a documentary photobook in which record and work become inseparable. In recent years, Hamada has expanded his practice beyond photography to include three-dimensional objects and moving images; here, his impulse to make and his methods are rendered self-reflexively visible through the medium of the book itself.
Produced as the second collaborative publication with the design studio Tanuki.
