FATHER ─ Maurice van Es
An artist’s book exploring fatherhood, football and the emotional complexity of living a life shaped by love.
FATHER is an artist’s book by Dutch photographer Maurice van Es, and part of his ongoing series on football, visual culture and the image. The third volume in the series, it brings together photographs of footballers as fathers, or of footballers seen alongside the artist’s own father. In dialogue with the preceding volume, Maradona, the book opens up a reflection on the (im)possibility of living a life shaped by love. Where Maradona is marked by obsession and decay, FATHER offers a warmer and more compassionate register. Together, the two books form a photographic duo that gives condensed shape to the complexity of life itself.
Published in conjunction with the book, a podcast was also produced in which a biologist, psychologist and economist each reflect on different aspects of fatherhood from their own perspective.
