Beyond Heaven: Chicago House Party Flyers From 1983-1989 by Brandon Johnson

Almighty & Insane Books

American collector,A collection of works by Brandon Johnson.

This book is a collection of house music flyers and ephemera from 1983 to 1989, courtesy of Mario “Liv It Up” Luna, a DJ who lived in Pilsen during the 80s. These flyers, also known as Pluggers, were used to promote parties. They were likely placed in record stores or handed out in schools or on the street to announce upcoming house music events. While not encyclopedic in scope, the collection documents the emergence of Chicago’s house music scene, including flyers for the first “kings of house” along with the names of lesser known DJs from WBMX Hot Mix 5 and various venues. It also lists the promoters, record stores, labels, and party crews and dance groups that contributed greatly to the growth and atmosphere of Chicago’s house music scene. This book will provide a taste of what many consider to be the best years of their lives, and for others new to the time, a primer to one of the best periods in Chicago music history.
