Maiden and Woman (Reprint Edition) by Hosoe Hideki

ナディッフ

A collection of works by Japanese photographer Eikoh Hosoe.

Inspired by a performance by butoh dancer Tatsumi Hijikata at the Dai-ichi Seimei Hall in Hibiya in 1959, Eikoh Hosoe created the series "Man and Woman," featuring Hijikata, his disciples and fellow dancers, and the fashion model Masako Ishida. This book isThis is a complete reprint of Hosoe's first book, published the year after his solo exhibition of the same title in 1960. Based on the origins of men and women in the Old Testament, this work differs from the mainstream nude photography up until then, which emphasized the sexual body, in that it attempts to explore and express more abstract emotions, the origins of humanity, and sexuality itself through the naked body, and is counted as one of the most important works in the history of nude photography in Japan.

Text by Ed van der Elsken and Tatsuo Fukushima. Text on obi by Seicho Matsumoto. Signed by the author.

"In the tumultuous atmosphere of the Security Treaty protests, the photographer and the model came face to face, and a photographic expression that had never existed in the world before was born. It not only became the prototype for subsequent photographers such as Hosoe, but also one of the prototypes of photographic expression. This is the long-awaited reprint." (From the publisher's commentary)
