Bent and Broken Shafts of Light by Lawrence Weiner
A collection of works by American artist Lawrence Weiner.
Winner had been sending out works as invitations, publishing his work in newspapers, and producing a large number of matchbox-shaped works. In the 1970s, Wiener began to carve works directly into the walls of exhibition spaces. In 2000, he conceived a work on the immateriality of color and light, inspired by the hues of the Northern Lights, and painted stripes of these colors on a 40 x 16.5 metre wall at the Wolfsburg Kunstmuseum. The white of the writing on the wall creates the effect of openings, and the wall itself appears almost transparent. Wiener's works inspired by the Northern Lights do not simply reflect natural phenomena, but rather complexly intertwine different levels of perception.
