Why Dresden - Photographs 1984/85 & 2015 by Seiichi Furuya

Spector Books

A collection of works by Japanese photographer Seiichi Furuya.

This book, composed of photographs taken by the Furuya family during their stay in Dresden in 1984, depicts everyday life in the last days of the German Democratic Republic, commonly known as East Germany, by a Japanese photographer. It is a unique document that is a record of Since the early 1980s, Furuya has been highly regarded in Austrian photography circles. Furuya, who came to Dresden in eastern Germany as an interpreter for a Japanese construction company, captures intimate scenes of the young Furuya family, moments of deep-seated anxiety and happiness, and daily life and society. In 2015, Furuya returned to Dresden for the first time in 30 years to hold an exhibition. I have created a new series on the theme of Pegida*'s demonstration march. It is said that Furuya was reluctant to publish this book because he did not want to go deeper into the world of "Memoire". However, persuaded by the enthusiasm of the director of the Dresden Museum, this book was published on the condition that Furuya would not be involved in any way. For this reason, although it has a different nature from the collection of works that Furuya has produced independently so far, it has the characteristic of simultaneously showing the sociality and individuality of Furuya's photographs, and photographs in general, as a documentary material. It is a collection of works.
