Nakahira Takuma: Return to the origin — Yokohama

Osiris

This is the exhibition catalogue produced in conjunction with Takuma Nakahira's first solo exhibition at a museum, "Return to the Roots - Yokohama," which was held at the Yokohama Museum of Art from October 4 to December 7, 2003, and then toured to the Naha Civic Art Gallery.

In 1977, Nakahira collapsed in Zushi and lost part of his memory and his ability to speak, but he moved to Yokohama and resumed photography the following year, gradually recovering and reaching a new stage in his career. For Nakahira, Yokohama was the "origin" of his return as a photographer, and it is still the place where he takes the most photos on a daily basis, which is why he named this exhibition "Return to the Origin - Yokohama." In addition to his latest color works, the exhibition includes his debut work For the Words to Come (1970) and works taken in Paris in 1971, as well as 110 works from the mid-1960s when Nakahira first began his career as a photographer, to his latest works in 2003.

"I believe that photography is not creation, nor is it memory; it is documentation. The act of taking photographs is never abstract, but always concrete. Rather than conceptualizing something simple and trying to make it complicated, here is the reality that I encountered through the medium of the camera." - Takuma Nakahira
