Street Photographs by Shimpei Asai
"Street Photographs" is a collection of works by Japanese photographer Shinpei Asai. The year 1970, when this work was published, was a time of upheaval and change, with events such as the Security Treaty protests, the Osaka Expo, the Yodo-go hijacking, and the Mishima incident. It is also a symbolic time in the history of photography, with the end of Provoke and the publication of Takuma Nakahira's "For the Words to Come."
This book includes photos that Asai took on the island of Guam. It may seem like a one-off trip, but in a sense, Asai may have been trying to recapture the chaotic times in his own way. This is a masterpiece that symbolizes the era, which goes from the so-called "composite photography" of Garry Winogrand and others to the New Topographics of Lewis Boltz and others.
"And what a monstrous age we live in today! World Expos and war, moon rockets and vagabonding, computers and fashion - all kinds of news are mixed together and ride the wave of information to appeal to our senses. Is it full of joy? Or is it bleak and empty? Either way, today's society is changing in many ways, as if viewed through a prism. In this overgrown society, in this age of prosperity, it is impossible for individuals to not feel a kind of bright despair." - Kasugai Ken (from the preface of this book)
