A volume on Comme des Garçons from Mémoire de la Mode, the fashion book series co-published by Éditions Assouline and Korinsha Press.
This book brings together Comme des Garçons’s advertising campaigns and printed matter produced between 1982 and 1997. Season posters, perfume advertisements, shop announcements and greeting cards trace the visual development of the brand over fifteen years. Through images by Cindy Sherman, Keizo Kitajima, Peter Lindbergh, Kishin Shinoyama and Steven Meisel, the publication follows Rei Kawakubo’s design philosophy and graphic language in chronological form.
The text is by art historian France Grand, known for her writing on avant-garde fashion, while the art direction was handled by Tsuguya Inoue, who served for many years as Comme des Garçons’s art director. The cover features a photograph taken by Jim Britt in 1976 of his daughters Jody and Mimi, later repurposed for the brand’s Autumn/Winter 1988 collection visual.
