Caruso ─ Letizia Le Fur

RVB Books

A photobook capturing Belmond Hotel Caruso through a dreamlike and theatrical vision shaped by light, fantasy and architectural grandeur.

Caruso is a photobook by French photographer Letizia Le Fur, produced as part of Belmond’s ongoing series of artist books created in collaboration with leading contemporary photographers. For this volume, Le Fur photographed Belmond Hotel Caruso on Italy’s Amalfi Coast in autumn 2022 and spring 2024, exploring the singular atmosphere of this historic site through her distinctive visual language.

Set within a manor with nearly a thousand years of history, Le Fur’s images draw on two sources of inspiration: an imagined vision of aristocratic English luxury, and the unreal, fantastical side of rural life found in old British cinema. Architecture and gardens appear as if suspended between Renaissance trompe-l’oeil and stage scenery from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, or perhaps as landscapes that have drifted out of a Hayao Miyazaki fantasy. Throughout the book, what Le Fur calls the “omnipresent sun” bathes eleventh-century walls and cliffside gardens in buttery light, giving every subject the quality of a character performing within a luminous and dreamlike theatre.
