Virtual Mass by Antoine Martin

RVB Books

An artist book by Swiss-based artist Antoine Martin.

For more than two years, Antoine Martin investigated "insecam," a website that posts real-time footage from vulnerable security cameras installed around the world. He focused in particular on the "virtual mass," a phenomenon that grew exponentially during the pandemic of the new coronavirus. At a time when meeting online and the digitization of information are becoming trends, this work demonstrates the ubiquity of remote monitoring and, at the same time, reveals the role of new technologies in liturgical spaces. The screenshots, housed in a publication that resembles a mass book, ultimately prompt the viewer to consider whether the digitization of the presence of God is possible.
