Womens Work
Women's Work was launched in the mid-1970s as a magazine showcasing the overlooked work of women artists working at the forefront of visual arts, music and performance. Edited by artists Alison Knowles and Annea Lockwood, the magazine featured text-based performance scores by a combined total of 25 artists, composers and choreographers.
Knowles, who designed the magazine, deliberately opted for off-white paper and brown ink, in contrast to the sterile white publications fashionable at the time. The works featured are wide-ranging and take many forms, using both typewritten and handwritten text, and often with visual elements such as diagrams, drawings and photographs. The pair also insist that the works are meant to be performed, and therefore the volume is not merely a lifeless book to be admired as an artefact.
"We wanted to publish work that other people could understand and put into practice. That aspect was really important...This wasn't anecdotal, this wasn't archival material, this was 'live' material. Look at the score and then do it." Annea Lockwood
