The Wedding by Boris Mikhailov

Mörel Books

A collection of works by Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov.

Born in Kharkiv, Ukraine in 1938, Mikhailov studied electrical engineering at the Technical University and worked as an engineer. In the 1960s, he began to teach himself photography and is now recognized as one of the most important photographers capturing the everyday life of post-Soviet society. Mikhailov's cold and ruthless portrayals of poverty and the homeless who live on the fringes of Russia's new economic system without social support or care, and in this series he photographs a mock wedding between two homeless people set in the world around them. Mikhailov's photographs often involve a comedic expression of complicity with his subjects, and his boundless cheerfulness further highlights the absurdity of this tragic life.

The cover is modelled after a classic wedding album. First edition limited to 1000 copies.
