Notes on Fundamental Joy by Carmen Winant

Printed Matter Inc.

A collection of works by Carmen Winant, a photographer based in Ohio, USA.

This book contains archival photographs from "Ovulars," a series of darkroom/photography workshops held by various feminist and lesbian separatist groups in the early '80s Pacific Northwest. Through a series of photographs, readers can see the women and communities that seem to respond to the “Back to the land movement”*.

At the bottom of the page is a horizontal line of essays by Wynan, highlighting the shamelessness and beauty Wynan feels about these works, and how they describe them away from her original subcultural context. I'm thinking about what the pictures mean. Also includes an essay by author and artist Ariel Goldberg.

Limited to 1000 copies.

*A movement that took place in the United States from the mid-60s to the 1980s, abandoning the consumer society and city life, and regaining an autonomous life in nature.
