Al cerchio delle tu mani by Bibi Tomasi

BilderAtlas

A photobook by Italian writer, poet, and journalist Bibi Tomasi.

Best known for her literary works—including "Il paese di calce" (Pratiche, 1999), "La sproporzione" (La Tartaruga, 1980), and "I padri della fallocultura" (co-authored with Liliana Caruso, Sugar, 1974)—Bibi Tomasi was a key figure in Italy’s feminist movement from the 1970s onwards. The photographs she captured during feminist gatherings have been preserved, alongside her writings, by the Milan-based collective “Archivio Bibi Tomasi”.

Published to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Milan Public Library and the 100th anniversary of Tomasi’s birth, Al cerchio delle tue mani is the first photobook to present her previously unpublished images, taken between 1974 and 1979.

Far more than simple social documentation, this work offers an intimate, visually resonant portrait of personal relationships within a politically charged historical moment. With its tactile sensibility and emotional depth, the book evokes the atmosphere of the 1970s and resonates with the sensibility of Bertien van Manen’s Vrouwen te Gast.
