A Parallel Road by Amani Willett
A collection of works by American photographer Amani Willett.
Using a multi-layered structure, the film explores and represents the Black driving experience in America over the past 85 years. By depicting how Black people have frequently been threatened with fear, violence, and death, A Parallel Road challenges the American ideal of the "road trip" that has long dominated our view of it through artistic and literary media. Building on the Green Book for Black Drivers, Willett layered archival material and new photography to explore the question of how long the road will continue to be a site of violence and oppression against Black people in American society.
An ambitious work that offers a new perspective on the road trip, one of the most important themes in the history of photography.
*"The Negro Motorist Green Book." A guidebook issued to African-American motorists in the United States during the era of racial segregation from the 1930s to the 1960s. It included information on accommodation, restaurants, gas stations, etc., where black people could stay.
