Newfave

A collection of works by Japanese fashion brand PUGMENT.

PUGMENT was founded by Karin Imabuku and Masahiro Otani in 2014. Since then, they have been introducing alternative designs and works that go beyond the frameworks of ready-to-wear and haute couture and are based on the history and circumstances of fashion itself.

This book was published in conjunction with PUGMENT's 2018AW collection, "1XXX-2018-2XXX." The collection is set in a science fiction setting based on the evolution of Japanese clothing since the Meiji era. In a world without humans, fashion has a will and emotions, and the fictional story of clothing possessing clothing critically examines the relationship between fashion and the body in Japanese society.

The collection pieces and the show held at Komagome Soko in March 2018 were photographed by photographer Kenta Kobayashi, who is of the same generation as PUGMENT. Kobayashi's work is characterized by bold editing of the photographs he takes using image editing software, and in this work he also uses a new technique of negative-positive inversion. Kobayashi's photographs and a large amount of text on Japanese fashion history that PUGMENT himself researched have been compiled into an art book by Newfave, an independent publisher that produces collections of works by next-generation photographers such as Daisuke Yokota, and graphic designer Shun Ishizuka.
